500th ANNIVERSARY OF THE REFORMATION

During the month of October we will be celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.  Leaders like Martin Luther and John Calvin spearheaded a movement that transformed the Church and eventually led to the emergence of Protestant denominations that exist today.

Why is this important to us?  Without the Reformation there would be no Baptist Church!  The Reformers were guided by the conviction that the church of that day had moved away from the original teachings of Christ, especially with regard to what it was teaching about salvation, (how people can be forgiven of sin through the death, and resurrection of Jesus, and how one receives eternal life with God).  The Reformers sought to reset Christian beliefs based on the original message of Jesus and the early church.

WORSHIP BAGS AVAILABLE

We are excited to announce that worship bags are available for children who are remaining in worship (grades 2 and above).  We request that bags be left on the hooks in the coat closet in the vestibule each Sunday and picked up prior to worship.

The Board of Christian Education is asking all church members to consider bringing an item to place in the bags (24 bags). As we promised this past Sunday, please help us “welcome” our children as they worship with us.

A NEW PIANO

After many faithful years of service, our choir room piano needs to be replaced.  With the blessing of the Board of Finance and the Board of Trustees, the Board of Music and Worship is asking the congregation to help us raise $5,000 for a new Yamaha piano.  We begin this project this coming Sunday, September 3!  Will you please help us “build” a piano?

Outside the choir room there is a keyboard that will be filled with piano keys as they are purchased so that you can see our progress.  Would you purchase a piano key?  The cost is $50 per key.  The Board of Music and Worship thanks you forfinancially supporting this effort!  And ALL our choirs are most appreciative!

JOIN THE CHURCH SUNDAY

Tommy has been preaching on the book of Acts throughout the summer.  We have read about those who were moved to join the church in mass!   At the end of worship on Sunday, August 27th, we invite anyone who has been thinking about joining the church to “come on down!”  Several of our children have expressed an interest in becoming a Christian and there are some adults who would like to join us here at Mars Hill Baptist, too!  If you have been thinking about making a profession of faith or moving your membership, this might be just the opportunity you have been looking for!  What a glorious day this will be!

MUSICAL NOTES

What a great day of worship we shared this past Sunday as our Chancel Choir along with members of our congregation helped us celebrate our faith with Hymns!  Thank you to the choir for their beautiful music making, to the quartet that blessed us with the Hymn medley and to everyone who shouted out a Hymn for us to sing together!  It was a wonderful day of worship in the house of the Lord!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

The Youth BBQ sale and Cake Auction was a great success! We thank everyone who stopped by to enjoy the delicious BBQ and all of the yummy cake donations. We raised over $4500, and of that total the cake auction brought in $1900! Many thanks to everyone that worked so hard and came out to support our youth mission trips.

Holy Week is such a special week in the life of the church!  On Wednesday, April 12, please plan to join us as we journey towards the cross as we remember the final week of the earthly life of Jesus.  We will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a covered dish dinner.  Bring your favorite dish(es) to share. (The Church will provide the meat.)

Following a time of fellowship around tables in the Fellowship Hall, we will read scripture passages that will remind us of the sacrifice Jesus made for us because of the incredible love God has for His children. We will then experience foot washing (optional) before partaking of The Lord’s Supper.  Please join us as we journey together to the cross!

Read The Bible Through In 2017!  When was the last time you spent time reading the Bible through? Most of us have read the Bi-ble through at one time or another. (In 2010 we read the New Testament as a part of our Lenten meditations.) The Board of Christian Education would like to invite our congregation to make a commitment to reading the Bible through chronologically in 2017. This means reading the Bible in the order scholars believe it was written. It really is fascinating! We hope you will consider making this one of your New Year’s resolutions! A copy of the readings is available at the exits of the Sanctuary or by going on-line to our website www.marshillbc.org.
